EVENTS
Crip/ Disability Doulaing Is a Freedom Dream and a Skill: Birthing and Supporting New Disability/ Chronic Illness/ Neurodivergence with Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha
Thursday, May 30, 1 - 2:30pm PT, on Zoom
We're not often given space to learn from other disabled people how to live with a new or emerging disability. Yet our survival, joy and resilience depend on it. Disability is seen as a secret shame or a problem to be managed or disappeared, not a natural part of life that deserves support, mentorship and transition rituals. Disability justice organizer and beloved ancestor Stacey Park Milbern coined the term "crip doulaing" to describe how disabled people support people rebirthing themself as disabled (or more/ differently disabled. She wrote, " This looks like a lot of things—maybe learning how to get medicine, drive a wheelchair, hire attendants, change a diet, date, have sex, make requests, code- switch, live with an intellectual disability, go off meds, etc..." In this workshop space we will explore and learn about disability doulahood/ mentorship, share our own experiences with it and map how we want to offer and receive that mentorship well.
